5 Must-See Highlights in Gambia!

When you think of Africa, Gambia probably isn’t the first place that comes to mind, right? I spent 5 amazing days in The Gambia, and I’m here to change that!

Nestled in West Africa, this small but incredible country is full of surprises, and definitely worth a visit.

Here’s my personal map with all the spots I visited during my motorbike trip in Gambia. If you need to rent a motorbike, the best company in the city is Top Cycles Team by Whatsapp or Facebook.

So if you find yourself in the capital of Gambia, Banjul, here are 5 must-see places you absolutely shouldn’t miss:

1. Bijilo Monkey Park

Bijilo Monkey Park, also known as Monkey Forest, is a peaceful sanctuary on the Gambian coast where you can encounter friendly green vervet monkeys and other wildlife in their natural habitat.

At the entrance, you can buy bags of bananas or peanuts from the locals for just a few dollars to feed the monkeys.

The price for the entrance is 300 Dalasi (4 USD) and if you want to explore the park with a guide the cost is 500 Dalasi (6.8 USD), reservation not needed. I personally recommend hiring a guide, it’s safer for interacting with the animals, and you’re much more likely to spot them. A walk through this lush forest offers a unique opportunity to get close to nature while enjoying the sounds and sights of West African wildlife.

To Arrive here you can use a taxi from your apartment or even walk if your hotel is in Senegambia district.

2. Kachikally Crocodile Pool

Are you brave enough to pet a crocodile? If so, you can’t miss visiting this place during your stay in The Gambia!

Kachikally Crocodile Pool, located in Bakau, is a sacred site where you can see and even touch friendly crocodiles. This unique spot offers a fascinating glimpse into Gambian culture, history, and wildlife all in one visit.

The staff here is extremely friendly, and with their help, you’ll get the chance to interact with real locals. Entrance costs 100 Dalasi (1.4 USD), but you can also donate any amount to help feed the crocodiles. Reservation not needed.

Better to donate than become their next meal, right?

3. Abuko Natural Park

Abuko Nature Reserve is a lush sanctuary just outside Banjul, home to a wide variety of wildlife including monkeys, birds, and reptiles. There are 5km of paths through the 106 hectare reserve, and a field station with views over a watering hole that’s often a good place for wildlife watching.

Visitors can enjoy walking along well-marked trails through lush forest and savannah, go birdwatching, spot monkeys swinging in the trees, and observe crocodiles in the ponds. Guided tours are available, which provide fascinating insights into the local wildlife and conservation efforts, making it both an educational and adventurous experience.

I didn’t visit this park, find more info in Abuko Natual Park website.

4. Poco Loco Bar

Poco Loco Bar is the perfect chill spot to unwind right on the beach. Relax on the sand, soak up the sun, and enjoy a delicious fresh fruit smoothie while listening to the waves all at very affordable prices.

We’ve spent a whole afternoon here while the beach was full of people during lots of activities like run with horses, boxing, running, swimming. Poco Loco Bar radiates laid-back, the food here is pretty good and often there’s live music in the afternoon/evening.

5. Royal Albert Market

The Royal Albert Market, located in the heart of Banjul, is a bustling hub of local life and culture. The market is full of locals and police as well, so extremely safe.

Here, you can wander through a maze of colorful stalls selling everything from fresh fruits, vegetables, and spices to handmade crafts, fish, meat, and souvenirs.

The market is alive with the sights, sounds, and aromas of Gambian daily life vendors calling out their goods, shoppers haggling, and the rich scent of local spices filling the air. Visiting the market is not only a chance to shop but also an opportunity to experience the authentic rhythms of Gambian culture and interact with friendly locals.

Ready for an adventure like no other? The Gambia is calling!

From playful monkeys and sacred crocodiles to vibrant markets and chill beach vibes, every corner bursts with life and stories waiting to be discovered.
