Definition

A Merenderos is the type of traveler who packs seven suitcases for a weekend trip because “you never know what you might need.”

They pick luxury hotels with spas (but never actually leave the pool), go on super-organized safaris where every minute is planned, and travel the world without ever talking to a local or stepping outside their protective bubble.

The result? They end up with the classic “The Africa syndrome”, or the malady of any other destination, because they’ve never really been to the real Africa, just a glossy, cushioned version far from reality.

Origin and Cultural Context

My friend Stefano and I coined the term in 2025, during our epic and crazy trip to Afghanistan, when we realized we were the kind of people who preferred sleeping under Kabul’s star-filled sky rather than partying at a rooftop pool in Dubai.

So we asked ourselves: but what do we call those who don’t see things the way we do?

That’s how we came up with the word Merenderos, originally meant as “picnic-travelers,” people who like to keep things comfortable, easy, and well-packaged rather than dive into the raw, unpredictable heart of a journey.

How to Spot a Merenderos

  • Their suitcase? Bigger than their hotel room.
  • Five-star hotel? Check. Spa? Check. Real adventure? Zero.
  • Safari? Only the ones with guides, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi.
  • Interaction with locals? Nah… better not risk it.
  • Improvisation? Only if it’s choosing between still or sparkling water.

Why It’s Important to Know Them

Because, my friends, traveling isn’t just about collecting passport stamps or perfect Instagram shots.

It’s about stepping out of your comfort zone, leaving the XXL luggage and instruction manuals at home, and diving into experiences that make you grow, laugh, be amazed, and (why not) even a little scared.

Conclusion

If you see yourself in this description, don’t worry, you’re not alone!

But on this blog, I want to give you all the tips and share my travel stories to help you leave that Merenderos traveler behind.

Traveling with an open heart, curious mind, and light luggage isn’t just possible, it’s the best thing you’ll ever do.
