Transnistria might be off the typical tourist radar, but this unique region offers fascinating sights and experiences you won’t find anywhere else. Before you start exploring the capital Tiraspol, make sure to check out my guide on How to Travel Transnistria Safely from the Moldova Border.

Here’s my personal map with all the spots I visited during my trips to Tiraspol.

So if you find yourself in the capital of Transnistria, here are 5 must-see places you absolutely shouldn’t miss:

1. The Green Market

If you’re arriving from Chișinău, get off here instead of going all the way to the central station.

The Green Market of Tiraspol, opened in 1956, is one of the city’s most authentic places. Locals wander among stalls of fresh fruit, vegetables, honey, handmade cheese, and homemade preserves.

It’s more than a place to shop; it’s an existential glimpse into everyday life in Transnistria.

You will need to have local currency, here there’s a small bank at the center lets you exchange money into Transnistrian rubles, completing the experience.

2. The “Limaniy” industrial market

Right in front of to the Green Market, you will find the “industrial” one. Differently from the green one, here it’s possible to find exclusively useful goods for locals as metals, plastics, wood, vehicle accessories as well as some interesting souvenirs.

Here, I managed to buy some fantastic Soviet OMO cameras for 5/10 USD, various types of coins, and a few souvenirs. At this market, you can even find Transnistrian plastic coins, which are becoming increasingly rare.

3. Lenin Monument and Palace of the Soviet Government

From the market, you can take a short walk to the Lenin Monument and the Palace of the Soviet Government, two of the most iconic landmarks in Tiraspol.

The Palace of the Soviet Government in Tiraspol, built during the Soviet era, is the seat of Transnistria’s authorities. In front stands a statue of Lenin, symbolizing the region’s strong Soviet heritage. It’s an iconic spot, you just can’t visit without taking a photo here!

Right in front of the Palace of the Soviet Government, you’ll find the St. George the Victorious Chapel and an impressive T-34 tank on display.

4. URSS Cantina Restaurant (CCCP)

Feeling tired and hungry from all the walking? Why not stop at an authentic Soviet-style canteen! On 25 October Street, you’ll find the URSS Cantina Restaurant (CCCP)

The cuisine is predominantly Russian (Soviet), the prices are incredibly low, and the atmosphere is truly one of a kind. Here you can taste classic Soviet dishes like borsch, a beetroot soup served with sour cream, pelmeni and vareniki.

Eating here isn’t just a culinary experience, it’s a real step back in time!

We ate there and had a lot of fun dressing up in typical Soviet soldier uniforms of the time. Привет!

5. Yuri Gagarin Mural

While exploring Tiraspol, don’t miss the striking mural of Yuri Gagarin, the first human into space on April 12, 1961.

Located on Cosmonauts Street, this vibrant artwork stands as a testament to the city’s Soviet heritage and its pride in space exploration. The mural, measuring approximately 10 meters in height, captures Gagarin’s iconic smile and the vastness of space.

It’s a must-see for history enthusiasts and those interested in Soviet-era art.

Ready for a journey unlike any other? Tiraspol is calling! Dive headfirst into the Soviet era, where every corner tells a story and history comes alive like nowhere else.

Don’t just visit, experience the thrill of stepping back in time!
